All you need to know about antiwrinkle injections
These days having cosmetic injectable treatments is almost as mainstream as having a facial! With so much overwhelming information available online we decided to put together this article to give you a one stop complete run down on all you need to know about antiwrinkle injections to help you decide if it is for you!
What is it exactly?
Anti-wrinkle products contain a neurotoxic protein that is aimed at relaxing facial muscles, to temporarily reduce and smooth out frown lines and other wrinkles.
The 2 main brands available in Australia are both approved for the indication of moderate to severe glabellar lines (frown lines) as well as lateral canthal lines (crow’s feet) in adults, however both products can be used to treat other areas of the face and neck.
Both brands are combined with human serum albumin, which acts as a stabiliser. Albumin is routinely used in many vaccines such as the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine; chicken pox vaccine and others and there have been no reports of any infections transmitted from the albumin.
Treatment for migraines, bruxism and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) are also possible and may be discussed with your medical practitioner.
Are the results instant?
Initial results with antiwrinkle products are often not seen until 3 – 4 days following treatment and maximum effect may take 2 - 3 weeks for some individuals.
The duration of effect lasts approximately 3 months but lessens over that time. Treatment effects are temporary and should be repeated 4 times a year for best results.
Results will vary for each person and will depend on the dose administered as well as individual patient differences.
Are there any side effects?
The most frequent side effect reported after treatment of the glabellar region is headache. Other side effects may include discomfort, burning, itching, redness or bruising at the injection site, temporary drooping of the eyebrows or eyelids, double vision, dry eyes, nausea or flu-like symptoms.
All side effects are temporary and, in the rare case of eyelid drooping, generally resolve spontaneously within 2 - 4 weeks.
Following treatment, patients should be gentle if they need to touch the treated area. Direct pressure or massage should be avoided as this may cause the products to spread further than anticipated and increase the chance of untoward side effects such as drooping of the eyebrows or eyelids.
Avoid exercise or any activities that would result in sweating including exposure to heat.
Is it safe for everyone?
Anti-wrinkle treatments are not recommended for pregnant or breast-feeding women, patients who have had a previous allergic reaction to botulinum toxin type-A or any ingredients in the products or patients with a medical condition of a neuro-muscular type such as myasthenia gravis.
Treatments should not be administered if there is any sign of infection at the proposed injection site and caution should be exercised in patients taking blood thinning medication.
Other than these exceptions there is over 20 years of safe usage involving millions of documented patients worldwide, comprehensive clinical trials, published studies and extensive clinical practice.
Ageing is more than skin deep
As our face ages, we tend to focus on the visible signs such as wrinkles. But in reality the signs of ageing are often the result of changes to the deeper layers of the face. In fact that over time, the shape and contour of the face changes, facial volume is gradually lost and the skin becomes thinner, making the effects of gravity more apparent (hence wrinkles and lines!)
The first step towards looking like the best version of yourself is to have a total face consultation with a Medically Trained Aesthetics Practitioner.
It’s possible to achieve subtle, natural-looking results, and still look distinctly ‘like you’, by employing the full range of options that modern anti-wrinkle and dermal filler treatments offer. However to completely appreciate how these treatments work together, and get the best results for you as an individual it’s important to understand the natural ageing process.
During a Total Face Consultation, our medical professionals will explain the ageing process, answer any questions and discuss which treatments can help achieve your goals. Understanding the complexity of facial anatomy, as well as creating undetected enhancements is an essential skill of any advanced cosmetic injector.
It is critical to assess your face as a whole, rather than just focussing on individual features, as different facial areas age at different rates and the key to retaining a fresh, natural look is to create balance and harmony across all areas of the face.
