How Can Lymphatic Drainage Massage Benefit You?

Lymphatic drainage massage can have a beneficial effect on your general health, keep your immune system working properly and improve the flow and drainage of lymph around the body.

The lymphatic system plays a key role in maintaining your health. But when things go wrong and this system gets blocked there can be serious health implications.

In this article we will define what the lymphatic system does for your body, what happens when things go wrong and how lymphatic drainage massage can benefit you in maintaining general health or by treating more specific conditions such as lymphoedema.

What is the lymphatic system?

The lymphatic system is essentially our bodies 'sewerage system'. It is made up of a network of delicate tubes that run throughout the body draining fluid (lymph) that has been removed from the blood vessels into the tissues and back into the bloodstream via the lymph nodes.

Key responsibilities of the lymphatic system are to control the level of fluid in our body tissue, to detect and react to foreign cells/bacteria in our system and to absorb fats from our intestines.

If our lymphatic system isn't operating at optimal function it becomes toxic and impairs our immune system.

Lymphoedema is caused when a blockage occurs in the lymphatic system. The blockage prevents fluid from draining properly and excess fluid collects in the tissues causing swelling (oedema).

Lymphoedema is a serious health issue that is caused by removal or damage to the lymph nodes. It is commonly seen in after or during cancer treatments, it can also occur from the use of medications such as blood thinners and when kidney function issues cause sluggish circulation. In some cases it can become pitting eodema, which is quite painful for the patient and they can lose feeling in their toes and feet.

Key benefits of Lymphatic Drainage Massage include:

  • Increased immunity, and reduced chance of catching colds and viruses; your lymphatic system helps your body fight off infection, and speeds up healing and recovery.

  • Reduced water retention; because the lymph system has no pump, if you sit for a long time without moving, the lymph can't flow easily, which is why you may experience swollen feet or fingers. Lymphatic drainage massage manually pumps the fluid around the body.

  • Boosts weight loss, lymphatic drainage massage improves your metabolic rate, which helps you burn calories more efficiently.

  • Improved skin texture by reducing swelling, puffiness and blotches, speeding up healing scar tissue, reduced cellulite (lymphatic drainage massage increases blood flow and circulation to affected areas, which helps the body break down the toxins which cause dimply skin!)

  • It is used in the treatment of lymphoedema as part of a medical treatment plan.

What to expect from a lymphatic drainage massage

Lymphatic drainage massage uses very light pressure and long, gentle, rhythmic strokes to increase the flow of lymph and reduce toxins in your body.

Lymphatic drainage can leave you feeling tired and super relaxed. You may want to rest or minimise your commitments for the rest of the day.

It is important to give your body time to adjust and ease back into being active. Lymphatic drainage massage may also leave you really thirsty. As always it is important to drink plenty of water after massage to assist the body in flushing out toxins and waste.

Hot tip!

Lymphatic drainage is about flushing out your system; you can do this every day making sure you are drinking plenty of water.

Also one of the best things you can do for your lymphatic system is to be more active. Even gentle activity will help encourage a healthy lymph flow, as movement of the muscles puts gentle pressure on the lymphatic vessels which keeps them moving.
